Message from the President
The Taiwan Society of Endoscopic Spine Surgery (TSESS) has grown significantly over the past decade. It was formally established in 2018 with the approval of the government, and by this year, 2025, it has expanded to include 400 member physicians. It is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic professional medical societies in Taiwan. The society's expertise includes uniportal and biportal endoscopic surgical techniques, treatment of cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine lesions, simple discectomy, spinal canal decompression, endoscopic spinal fusion and internal fixation, as well as pain management, infection debridement, tumor resection assistance, and hemorrhage clearance.
The saying goes, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Our society's goal is to ensure that all physicians can learn and grow together. This spirit of collaboration and growth has been fostered by past presidents and board members, who have selflessly shared their knowledge and experience through countless physical and online meetings, and hands-on training sessions. The passion for education and the promotion of safe, effective minimally invasive spine endoscopy surgery to benefit patients are our society's two main objectives.
In the coming year, we will focus more on the education and training of surgeons in minimally invasive spine endoscopy surgery to achieve safer, standardized, and regulated surgical treatment quality for the benefit of patients. We will organize solid academic conferences for sharing and exchanging professional surgical results, maintain online continuing medical education (CME) courses for limitless learning, and attempt full English sessions to facilitate international physician participation and exchange. We will also hold realistic spine model surgery workshops in various regions of Taiwan to provide foundational training for young and resident physicians. These will be complemented by advanced cadaver simulation surgical training camps to offer a realistic surgical feel before actual procedures. Additionally, observing certified instructors' surgeries or conducting one's own surgeries under a support system is essential for skill development.
In the future, our society aims to establish a certification system through education and training, including certified professional spine endoscopic physicians, certified instructor physicians, and certified national and international training centers to achieve our safety and regulation goals. We will also provide the Taiwan Spine Endoscopy Recommendation Map for public reference.
This year, we will continue international exchanges. At the end of February, at the ASEAN Minimally Invasive Spine Congress(ASEANMISST) in Bangkok, our Taiwan TSESS will host a comprehensive forum featuring eight speakers discussing various specialized areas of Taiwan's spine endoscopy development. We will showcase our achievements and capabilities internationally. After signing memorandums of understanding with Malaysia and India last year, we plan to sign similar agreements with Thailand and Vietnam this year. Taiwan is happy to assist countries or medical societies in need of professional support, helping promote spine endoscopy education, train professional physicians, and establish certifications, thereby making international friends with soft power.
The rapid advancement of medical technology, including the optimization and refinement of endoscopic tools, computer navigation and robotic-assisted surgery, digital imaging, AI image big data deep learning, and customized surgical plans for each patient, embodies our society's spirit of endless pursuit of excellence. In the new year, we wish all our member physicians professional growth and success in their endeavors and wish good health and safety to all visitors.
